Gotham – Lower Hutt

The Place:

This cafe is the second Gotham to open.  The original Gotham is in Chews Lane in central Wellington which I frequented many, many times.  The Wellington one has a great, funky vibe, this one does not.  It feels like a cheap, yet modern ripe-off.  This cafe is not far from Queensgate Mall, but if you don’t know its here then you will miss it!  I was kind of disappointed with the lack of vibe here. In saying this, the place has a great menu, loads of cabinet food or menu options and the coffee was great.  You can order gluten free or vegetarian so this cafe does cater for most dietary requirements. There is plenty of seating inside and seating outside as well.

The Service:

The service was okay.  I guess I was expecting (rightly or wrongly) the same superb service that I got in the Chews Lane cafe.  The staff did nothing wrong, they just did not really seem very engaged.  One thing of note, the cafe was busy and yet our meals came out surprisingly fast!

The presentation:

The food was plated up well and looked yummy.  I liked the little sprinkling of parsley to add a wee bit of colour and flavour to the plate.

  • The Montreal – was ok, nothing memorable.
  • The eggs – were free-range, runny and warm.
  • The salmon – was okay, nothing special here.
  • The hollandaise – there was a slight lemony taste to the hollandaise and you could taste that it was freshly made.  This was by far the best part of the dish.
  • The bread – was toasted sourdough.  It was nicely toasted.  I enjoyed it.

Would we go again?

I would not go out of my way to go here, however if I was at the mall, and got a bit peckish then I would consider giving this cafe another try……and especially considering how good the coffee is.
